What Is a Divan Bed Base?
The divan is one of the most popular bed base types in the UK. It is offered in a range of colour and fabric options, as well as often being adorned with equally decorative headboards.
The bed base may be fitted with wheels, which help to increase mobility, or legs, to create space underneath. However, stripped back to its most basic elements, a divan is essentially an upholstered box that is used to support a mattress.
A divan bed can be a great option when space is at a premium. Beds of this variety are often equipped with a set of integrated drawers. Alternatively, the beds may have a lift-up function – these are known as ottoman divans. Both options offer a handy storage solution though care must be taken to ensure that the weight stored within the drawers is not exceeded.

Divan beds are available in three main styles. The most basic is the solid top divan (sometimes referred to as a platform top). These beds have a rigid, non-sprung top panel. It is common for this top panel to be made from hardboard, although other materials may be used. Quality platform tops tend to be quite firm and are used to compliment the mattress to increase firmness.
Firm edge divans, meanwhile, are sprung. They feature large, heavy duty springs that are housed within a wooden sided frame. The third option is the sprung edge divan bed. This is generally considered to be the most luxurious form of divan bed available. It comes replete with either an open coil or pocket spring unit, which is mounted on a frame. This arrangement ensures that the bed provides plenty in the way of shock-absorption. The beds can offer great levels of comfort and tend to be extremely durable.
