The Dos and Don’ts of Caring for Your New Mattress

The lifespan of a mattress can vary greatly depending on how it has been looked after.

In this post we take a look at some of the dos and don’ts of mattress maintenance to ensure you are able to maximise the longevity of yours.

Do: Turn You Mattress Regularly

Unless you have bought a non-turn mattress (which will still require rotating) turning is a key component when it comes to mattress maintenance. Mattress rotation  should be completed once a month and then quarterly thereafter. For the first few months, you should aim to turn your mattress from end to end and side to side around once every week. After this initial phase, you can reduce your turning efforts to about once every three months. This can help to evenly distribute wear of the mattress and extend its lifespan.

Don’t: Bend or Roll Your Mattress

Although large and heavy, a new mattress can be delicate, so should be handled with care. Avoid bending or rolling a mattress (unless it is of the roll up variety) because these actions can permanently damage the springs / internal components / internal materials / external coverings.

Do: Use a Mattress Protector

A removable mattress protector can not only help to maximise the comfort of your mattress, it can help to protect it from things like tea spillages, sweat and saliva. These and other types of fluids can be detrimental to the condition of a mattress; however, to a removable mattress topper, which can easily be taken off and washed, they pose little threat.

Don’t: Worry about Body Impressions

Body impressions on a new mattress, also known as settlement marks, are quite common, and all part of a high quality mattress conforming to the shape of your body. Although they do not cause damage to a mattress, the aesthetics of these impressions can be off putting to some. Turning your mattress can help to minimise their appearance.

Bonus Tip: Be Patient!

As with most new things, a new mattress can feel unfamiliar at first; it may even fall below your expectations. However, several weeks may be required for a new mattress to fully settle and provide its optimal levels of comfort.
