3 Top Tips for Buying Your Next Bed

3 top tips for buying your next bed

Add up all the hours we spend in bed and it equates, on average, to around a third of our lives. Clearly then, it’s important to sleep in the right bed. With that in mind, we’ve come up with three top tips to help you make the right choice.

Test Your Bed

It’s probably safe to buy your underwear without trying it on. Slippers too, you can just about get away with buying without a fitting. However, when it comes to bed buying, you should never make a decision without extensive testing. We cannot stress this enough: there is no substitute for trying out a potential bed before buying. It’s for this reason that we would always recommend going in-store, trying the beds and gaining advice from a bed expert at a specialist bed retailer.

To properly try out a bed, you should locate a shop which has your chosen model in stock. After removing uncomfortable clothing, such as belts, shoes and jewellery, you should then lie in the bed for at least ten minutes. Adopt your usual sleeping position, and take note of how the bed aligns to your body

Consider As a Couple

If you are buying a bed that will be used by more than one person, make sure that all parties concerned shop together. Comfort is very subjective, so what may feel nice to one person may not be to another’s taste. Test out a number of different models until you find something you both like. Some retailers will have devices to identify the type of mattress that will most suit your needs. This may allow you to reduce the number of mattresses you try.

If you and your partner differ widely in weight (by around three stones or more) you may actually require different mattresses. Alternatively, you may benefit from a special type of mattress that combines two different degrees of firmness in a single unit.

Look for NBF Approval

The National Bed Federation, or the NBF, is the organisation that regulates trading standards within the bed industry. All members of the NBF must adhere to strict criteria pertaining to quality, safety, hygiene and more. Whenever buying a bed, look out for the NBF logo. Kaymed are proud to be members of the NBF.

Beware: Never buy a bed from a man in a van, make sure you only buy from a bona fide store.
