The Covering Fabric

The covering fabric (or ticking as it is sometimes called) can significantly impact on the way a mattress feels. A firm feeling surface is often achieved through cotton or cotton-polyester blended fabrics where the fabrics can be tightly woven and a taut surface achieved. Alternatively a more luxurious, sumptuous feeling surface that has a more pliable, silky feel and is soft to touch is achieved by using damask. This is therefore appropriate for luxury market, top end products.

Extra Firm Mattress Approaches

The way that the mattress fillings are held together will significantly impact on the overall comfort of the mattress.

• Tufting: A common approach is tufting. This technique is used to give the mattress a noticeable dimpled surface. It is achieved by having dozens of strong tapes threaded through the mattress which are attached to felt tufts. The layers of filling are tightly secured so they cannot move which gives the mattress a firmer feel.
• Diamond Stitching: An alternative to tufting is diamond stitching. This is where the cover is stitched directly to the filling which creates a raised, patterned effect. Sometimes this is referred to as high loft or being micro quilted. Diamond stitching will generally provide a more sumptuous feel as both the spring unit and upholstery are released providing them with the capability to conform to their natural position.

Extra Firm Mattress Settlement

The fillings in a mattress will always settle and become compressed over the first few months of a mattress’s life. The settlement and compression is perfectly normal but can often be more noticeable and pronounced on higher quality mattresses with deeper fillings. Any dipping  that occurs should even out after a period of time, this is where turning the mattress helps during the settlement period.
