Bed and Mattresses Selection
Bed and Mattresses Considerations
How a bed feels is predominantly determined by the type of mattress. The majority of mattresses contain either a coiled or pocket sprung units. Fundamentally the mattress fillings provide the comfort while the springs provide support. Typically the greater the number of springs and greater volume of filling the better.
If you only want to change your mattress you can place a new mattress upon your existing bed base if it either a platform top (firm base) or slatted and the surface is completely flat.
Placing a new mattress upon an old sprung base should be avoided as although it may look in good condition, there will probably be wear to the internal springs. This means when a new mattress is placed on the bed base it will sink in the worn areas. Potentially this could permanently damage the new mattress, provide an uncomfortable sleeping experience and may invalidate the mattress guarantee.
Mattresses Fillings and Finish
The filling used in a mattress is as important as the spring system as the filling will impact on the overall comfort. There are numerous filling types used in mattresses such as
- Cotton
- Response Gel
- Therma~phase
- Memory foam
- Coir
- Sisal
- Lambs wool
- Latex
A combination of fillings will radically alter the feel of the mattress. For this reason whilst looking at mattress specifications is one thing actually lying on the bed will provide a better reflection of how comfortable the bed will feel. We would always recomend visiting your local bed stockist and trying out the mattress types.
