Back Support Pillows To Avoid Neck Ache

  • The average adult persons head weighs approximately ten to 12 pounds (a bag of sugar normally weighs about 2 pounds)?
  • There are thirty three vertebrae in your spine and your neck contains seven of them
  • Neck pain, stiff necks and even persistent headaches in many cases could simply be the result of having incorrect head alignment through poor pillow support while in bed sleeping?
  • A good pillow should hold your head in the correct alignment
    • A pillow that is too soft will allow the head to flop, which will ultimately result in curving the neck.
    • A pillow that is too hard has the potential to give you a crick in the neck.
  • Just like shopping for a mattress where you need to give each mattress a thorough testing you should try out different types of pillows before making your final decision.
  • Where possible you should try out the pillows on a mattress where you can lie down on your side. Ideally the pillows should support the head fully with the pillows being tucked well into the neck and shoulder.

Too Few or Too Many Pillows

  • Too many pillows will potentially cause the spine to curve upwards and the skin to crease on the top of your neck.
  • Too low or thin a pillow will potentially make the spine curve downwards and cause a crease on the underside of the neck.
  • Note: it is fine to sleep on your sides or back but where possible try to avoid sleeping on your stomach. This puts a lot of strain on your neck as essentially it is permanently twisted all during the night.
  • There is no set criteria to how many pillows its just a matter of personal choice in order to achieve the correct head and neck support
  • Importantly good quality pillows should be able to retain their shape and give you constant support throughout the night
