A Guide to Bed Buying
There’s a lot to think about when buying a new bed, including a few factors that you might not have considered. We’ve compiled this quick guide to bed buying to help you find your perfect night.
Do You Need a New Bed?
First thing’s first, you should ascertain whether or not you need a new bed. In general, it is recommended that you change your bed at least every seven to eight years. Tell-tale signs that you need a new bed include:
- Waking up feeling unrefreshed or aching
- You recently had a better night’s sleep in
- Your bed is showing visible signs of wear and tear

Size
There’s plenty of options here, you can choose anything from a 3 foot small single up to rather grander 6 foot super king. The size you go for is partly dependent on your preferences but also bear in mind that your bed should be at least 10 centimetres longer than the tallest person sleeping in it and allow you to put your hands under your head with elbows pointing outward without touching anything.
Look for the Tick
The National Bed Federation, also known as the NBF, is the organisation that regulates trading standards within the bed industry. All members of the NBF must adhere to strict criteria pertaining to quality, safety, hygiene and more. We recommend only buying from NBF member manufacturers to ensure that you get the bed that you’ve been promised.
Price
A bed is a long term investment that should be considered on a cost per night basis. Look for a high quality option from a respected manufacturer. Although the initial outlay may seem high, the value for money is far greater than a cheap bed or second hand option.
Try Before You Buy
This is perhaps the most important factor of the bed buying process. Using the internet is fine to research beds – in fact it’s often preferable to traipsing across the high street – but nothing beats testing a bed out in person. To test out a bed in store, lie in the bed for at least 10 minutes in your usual sleeping position and consider carefully how it aligns to your body. Is your spine aligned? Are you comfortable? Do you feel supported?
