Tips for Mattress Maintenance and Care – Part One

In general, a mattress is not an insignificant purchase, so it is perfectly natural that you would want to get the most out of your investment. Unfortunately, life sometimes has different ideas and your mattress can be subjected to any number of forces of nature that can cause it damage and hasten its demise.

In this two part post, we consider a few of the dangers that lie in wait for your mattress and offer some suggestions on how to combat them.

Flipping Good Idea

Flipping your mattress is a very simple but effective way of extending the use you get out of it. As creatures of habit, we tend to sleep in the same place on bed every night, a factor that can cause pressure to be unevenly distributed. Over an extended period of time this can result in indentations, particularly in the case of new mattresses. By turning your mattress once a month or so (or once every two months for mattresses over a year old), this ensures that you change the area on which you sleep, thus helping to avoid the appearance of indentations.

The Rationale for Rotation

Despite the virtues we have just extolled about flipping your mattress, it is actually not a necessary course of action for certain products. Memory foam and visco elastic will compact after a period of time which is quite normal if within tolerance. While flipping a memory foam mattress will not do it any harm, it may be wasted effort. Instead, try to rotate the mattress, turning it around on the same side, to help to prevent against disproportionate wear occurring in one particular spot.
