What Can Be Done To Minimise Mattress Settlement Issues?

The cost of purchasing a good mattress can be quite significant. So waking up one morning to find perceptible body indentations in the bed is often the last thing you want to see. But are these types of settlement issues actually anything to worry about? And, if so, can they be prevented? We discuss further in this post.

Why It Happens

As a rule of thumb, people and mattresses are rarely the same size. That is to say, there are not many people walking around who measure 60 inches wide by 78 inches tall, not in our experience at least.

This disparity in size is perfectly normal but invariably results in pressure being concentrated on one area of a mattress. Because the pressure is not displaced evenly throughout the unit, indentations often occur where a person has been sleeping.

Is It Anything to Worry About?

In general, sleep settlement issues are nothing to be hugely concerned about. In fact, they can be a sign of a high quality product. For instance, wool is one of the best wadding components available. The natural material provides plenty of long lasting comfort.

However, because of its soft nature, indentations on a wool wadded mattress can be particularly discernible. Conversely, mattresses with minimal wadding layers (which, incidentally, are generally on the cheaper end of the spectrum) tend not to suffer this particular issue.

Although perfectly normal and rarely a sign of anything more problematic, settlement issues can still disrupt the aesthetics of a product. Luckily, there are a few ways to minimise the issue.

How to Minimise Impact

One effective method of avoiding settlement issues is to regularly turn and rotate your mattress. This allows your weight to be spread evenly across the mattress over time. Another way to achieve this is to try to sleep on different parts of the bed on different nights, so as to spread the pressure around.

To avoid settlement issues, you can also try a mattress topper. These very useful adornments can help to absorb your bodyweight and reduce pressure on the mattress below.
