Pocket Springs Explained
If you are in the market for a mattress, one key component that you should fully understand is the pocket spring. In this post, we will try to help you get a little better acquainted with this very topic, read on to find out more.
Foundation
Pocket springs are essentially the building blocks upon which every high quality mattresses is made. The name refers to how the springs are housed within a mattress. Each coil is individually wrapped in its own fabric pocket. Because the springs are independent of each other, this allows them to move individually thus providing enhanced support to a sleeper by adjusting to the contours of the body.

Pocket Springs in Numbers
You may have noticed that a pocket sprung mattress is more often than not accompanied by a number, such as 1000 pocket springs. It is intuitive to think that this figure denotes the quantity of springs that are found in the mattress. Unfortunately there is no standard on a pocket springs so some manufacturers use mini springs which are tiny though count as a spring. However, the number is actually relative and instead relates to the number of pocket springs found in the king size mattress of any given model (the measurements of which are 150 centimetres by 200 centimetres or 5 feet by 6 feet 6 inches).
By using this relative figure, it helps to standardise the metric across all pocket sprung mattresses, allowing for easy comparison between mattresses of different sizes. Just to spring a surprise on customers however, some manufacturers have begun to provide actual rather than relative figures. So to be on the safe side, always be on the look-out for a mattress’ king size spring count.
How Many Springs Do You Need?
The lower the number of springs in a mattress, relative to size of course, indicates a wider diameter of spring. The opposite is true of mattresses with a higher count of springs. In theory, the greater number of springs in a bed the more support it will offer. However, it’s always worth bearing in mind that even mattresses on the lower end of the pocket spring count are far superior to those mattresses using an open coil or continuous coil system.
Final note the spring count should only be treated as a rough guide, the ultimate bed test is going into a store and trying out the bed.
