Routine

Making and sticking to a consistent routine is vitally important if you want to improve the quality of your sleep. Start consciously winding down around an hour before bed, turn off any bright lights and partake in relaxing activities, such as light reading.

Temperature

Temperature plays a huge role in our lives: in the morning our internal thermostat naturally rises – helping us to feel more alert – at night, meanwhile, it drops – which helps to make us feel sleepy. To ensure you sleep at a comfortable temperature, you should avoid having a hot bath or shower too soon before bedtime, as well as ensuring you wear appropriate garments to sleep in. Try light fabrics made from breathable materials, such as cotton, silk and bamboo.

What to Avoid

There are a few sure-fire way to negatively affect your ability to sleep. These include:

  • Watching TV – especially highly engrossing, or high-octane programmes and films.
  • Using electronic devices – as well as often stimulating the mind, electronic devices give off a light that inhibits the production of a chemical in the body that makes us sleepy.
  • Sleeping with pets in the bed – animals have very different sleep patterns to humans and can disturb us during the night.
  • Drinking caffeine – try to avoid caffeine up to six hours before bed, this includes energy drinks, coffee and tea (even green tea).
