How To Clean A Kaymed Mattress
When you spend approximately a third of your life lying on a mattress its going to get dirty or stained. Mattresses have a very hard life, and over time no matter how clean you are will gradually accumulate a rather unpleasant concoction of
- Oils and chemicals from cosmetic products
- General grime
- Dried sweat
- Blood
- Other human bodily fluids

Techniques to make your mattress hygienic again
We would always recommend that mattresses are regularly cleaned (every couple of months ), it doesn’t take much time to clean them speedily and effectively.
The first step to a cleaner mattress
Strip the bed completely and wash and dry the sheets, pillows, duvet (depending on its size this is something that might need to be cleaned in the local launderette) , mattress cover. Note if you use an electric blanket this should be cleaned as per the specific manufacturers instructions.
You will need to carefully check the washing instructions for each of the fabrics and use the hottest water and drying settings permitted to ensure dust mites are killed off.
Be very careful
- Be aware some items might be dry clean only
- Some mattresses may have removable machine washable covers, but ensure you check instructions and manufacturer warranty carefully as you don’t want to wash something that subsequently shrinks and wont fit.
Getting rid of stains on the mattress
Once the mattress is bare you can look for and clean any stains. Remember mattresses are not waterproof so never soak them with water. Always pat or dab with care and only use cleaning products after first checking the mattress label and any documentation provided.
- Blood:
- Pat, but don’t rub, the stain with a very small amount of cold water and leave to dry.
- In many cases this is often all it takes.
- If this doesn’t rid the stain, add a little baking soda to the water and try again, leaving it for half-an-hour before patting it again with clean water then leaving it to dry.
- If it’s still not clean? Try diluting a small amount of washing-up liquid in water and dab it on the stain with a cloth.
- Urine:
- Dilute some washing-up liquid in water and dab it on the stain with a cloth.
- If this doesn’t work use an upholstery cleaner. Note try diluting it first and spray it onto a cloth as opposed to directly onto the mattress.
- Bodily fluids (e.g sweat):
- Use the diluted washing-up liquid as above.
- Food and drink: Use the baking soda and water method mentioned above.
Note: Never use bleach to clean your mattress. There are proprietary cleaners like Stain Devil available, always follow the products instructions
