Dust Mites, Moulds and Hypoallergenics

During a lifetime, the average person spends around one third of it asleep. So it is important that our bedrooms are healthy environments, particularly if we are susceptible to allergies. In this post we will discuss two prominent pests in the bedroom: mites and mould. As well as considering how to eradicate them.

Dust Mites

A dust mite measure around 0.25 millimetres in size. Males live for up to 20 days, females a little longer, for around 70 days. How can something so small and so relatively short-lived affect us so profoundly?

The answer comes down to their ubiquity; as many as 500 mites may live on a single gram of dust. A female dust mite, meanwhile, will lay some 100 eggs during her life. Dust mites, along with the debris they create, can cause a number of issues, including:

  • Itchy skin
  • Regular, repeated sneezing
  • Allergies
  • Eye irritation

Eliminating Dust Mites

Short of burning your bed and tearing up your carpet, you’re unlikely to ever be truly free of dust mites. However, there certain things you can do to reduce their presence in your bed.

One step that may help is to use a hypoallergenic mattress. A mattress such as this can help to reduce instances and severity of allergic reactions.

It is also extremely good practice to employ a rigorous cleaning regime. If you find dust mites problematic, try to wash your sheets at least once a week before tumble drying them.

Mouldy Mattresses

Admittedly not a particularly common problem, a mouldy mattress can nevertheless have a profoundly negative effect on health should it occur. Mould can trigger allergies as well as cause respiratory issues.

To reduce the likelihood of your bed sprouting mould, you should keep it in a well ventilated room. To increase air circulation, open windows and doors.

Do not be tempted to apply hot air to a bed in an attempt to dry the mould, this could damage both the exterior and the interior of the mattress.

Infrequently used mattresses, such as those kept in a spare room, can be more vulnerable to mould. In order to negate the growth of mould, give the mattress a flip every month or so. For more mattress maintenance tips, click here.
