Buying A Bed Make Sure You Read This First

The top 6 bed selection criteria

Buying a bedBefore you go shopping for a new bed, think about what you want from your bed. Here are a few general points to consider:

  1. What bed type do you need
    • What do you like or dislike about your current bed?
    • Would you prefer a firmer or softer feel?
  2.  Analyse the actual cost of bed ownership.
    • Always shop around for the best value not just the lowest price.
    • Did you realise that you will spend a third of your life in bed so the cost per night of sleep can be measured in pennies.
    • New bed technology is constantly being researched and improved bed materials are being regularly introduced by Kaymed
    • The better the construction of the bed materials , the better the support and comfort and the longer the bed will last.
  3. With a bed size matters, so think big.
    • With a larger bed you are far less likely to disturb your partner, and will have the space to sleep more soundly.
    • Ideally when in your bed you should be able to lay side by side, with your arms behind your head and your elbows out, without touching each other.
    • Interesting bed size fact : On average a standard double bed will only offer each partner the width to spread out of a standard cot.
  4. Buy a mattress made by an NBF member.
    • The law on bed safety regulations are very well established and there to protect the consumer from
      1. Unsafe,
      2. Unhygienic,
      3. Non fire retardant materials.
    • Kaymed are members of the NBF and strongly recommend that you only buy products manufactured by an NBF member; even if your final choice is not a Kaymed product.
    • Look for the NBF logo or visit the website www.bedfed.org.uk to clarify that the manufacturer is a member before you buy.
  5. Only buy from a reputable retailer.

  6. Check dimensions.
    • This may seem strange but the bed industry doesn’t operate standardised sizes
      • Unfortunately bed sizes are not standardised and even if two bed brands have the same name size they may not be the same size. i.e. a Kaymed King size may be bigger than another manufacturers King size
      • Ideally you need to check that the base and the mattress are from the same manufacturer as they need to be compatible. Typically a bed and a mattress are designed to work together and a change of base could affect the feel and performance of the mattress
      • Will the bed and mattress fit into your home?
        • Most divan beds have split bases making them easier to carry upstairs
        • Bedsteads are often delivered in pieces for assembly within the room.
        • To avoid problems with delivery, you should tell the retailer about potential access problems before you buy and check the retailer’s terms and conditions.
