Bed Too Hot Causing Disrupted Sleep

Bed Too Hot Is Your Mattress The Cause

Find out more about how mattresses affect sleep temperature and fixes for a too hot or too cold bed.

Bed Too Hot Causing Disrupted SleepTrying to get a great night’s sleep in a bed that is too cold or too hot can prove to be extremely difficult. If you are trying to sleep in conditions that are too cold this can  make it hard to sleep well as well as potentially contributing to arthritis and other symptoms.  A bed that is to hot causes sweating, tossing and turning and disrupted sleep and is just downright uncomfortable. Maintaining your mattress and bedroom at the optimum sleep temperature whilst finding a manageable solution, especially for partners who may well have different sleeping temperature preferences, can seem challenging but is not impossible. In this article,we will consider how to cool down at night.

Why Do You Sleep Hot or Cold?

There are many factors that combine to make a bed feel too cold or hot to sleep in a comfortable manner. These include

  • The temperature of the bedroom
  • Mattress composition,
  • Bedding – Egyptian cotton sheets will offer significantly different temperature characteristics to say Nylon sheets
  • Individual metabolisms and preferences – the classic challenge of you feeling hot whilst your partner always feel cold. When you consider that our bodies also experience temperature fluctuations during the night.  So what feels comfortable at ten thirty PM may feel too cold a couple of hours later and then too warm again in the morning!
  • The breathable or insulating characteristics of your mattress can impact on how hot you feel, and certain types of bedding provide varying degrees of  breathing.

How Bed Composition Influences Sleep Temperatures

Once personal characteristics and room temperature have been considered, your mattress then impacts on in how cool or warm you will ultimately feel. It is important to recognise that each bed type has different materials which ultimately impact on its temperature properties. So if being too hot in bed is a concern for you, knowing the differences can be helpful when choosing a new mattress. We will consider mattress characteristics in a future article.
