A Guide to Pillow Buying

By the time you’re fully grown, your head weighs around 12 pounds, that’s six times more than a bag of sugar. No wonder then, that without a suitable pillow to support us during the night, it’s common to experience discomfort in the neck, back and even shoulders. But how do you choose a pillow that’s right for you? Read our guide to pillow buying to find out more.

Know When to Replace Your Pillow

A pillow normally lasts between two and 3 years. After which time it will probably need replacing. Key signs to look out for are flatness, loss of original height, misshapenness and discolouration. You can also take cues from your own body. If you regularly wake up with back pain, sore shoulders or a stiff neck, you may want to consider replacing your pillow.

Which Pillow Is Right for You?

To answer this question, you need to consider how you sleep.

In general, side sleepers benefit from a deeper pillow. Those who sleep on their back or front, meanwhile, generally prefer a slimmer pillow. Not everyone is the same, however; and there are exceptions to the rule. The most important thing is your neck position, which should align with your spine. An ideal pillow should allow you to sleep without your neck tipping forward or backward.

Try Before You Buy

When you’re in the market for a new pillow, it’s extremely important to try before you buy. Your pillow needs may change as you age for a number of reasons, including chronic injuries or weight fluctuations.

To test a pillow out, adopt your usual sleeping position and rest your head on a pillow for around 10 minutes. Pay careful attention to how the pillow aligns to your body. If this isn’t possible in store for whatever reason, test it at home before removing the packaging.
