If your child is anxious about school, it can cause sleep problems. However, in order to preform to the best of their abilities in the classroom, as well as socially and in terms of wellbeing, restful sleep is essential. So how can you reverse the trend? It’s a topic we hope to tackle in the following post.
Unpopping Ears – Technique While Flying for Better Sleep
Long distance air travel is generally not conducive to a good night’s sleep. There are a number of challenges that you need to contend with should you want to nod off, including seats that are unsuitable for sleep, the distraction of fellow flyers watching screens and, of course, the perennial problem of painful popping ears.
Why Do Our Ears Pop on Flights?
The middle ear is connected to the back of the nose via the Eustachian tube. Air normally passes through this channel helping us to maintain roughly equal air pressure on both sides of the eardrum. However, when blockages occur, this can prevent equality being achieved. The end result is often an uncomfortable feeling of a vacuum accompanied by muffled hearing and clicking noises.
The Eustachian tube may commonly become blocked because of congestion caused by colds and allergies. Another chief cause of blockages is air travel, which causes changes in air pressure that can irritate the passage.

How to Combat Popping Ears
The body generally adjusts automatically to the change in air pressure and your ears should clear before too long; however, you can expedite the process by swallowing and yawning. You can try to encourage swallowing by sucking a boiled sweet or chewing on chewing gum.
Conversely, you should avoid sleep during take off and landing, during which the most dramatic changes in air pressure occur. You swallow less when you’re asleep, while a reclined position can also inhibit air flow through the Eustachian tube.
Meanwhile if you’re travelling with an existing cold or allergy, or you just find that you often experience blocked ears during flights, a decongestant can help to clear the passageways.
Having taken these steps, you should be able to clear your ears and improve your chances of getting a bit of shuteye.
Are You Sleeping in the Right Bed?
Sleeping conditions on flights are often out of your control, but it’s a different story after you’ve landed. Give yourself the best of enjoying restful, restorative sleep on a regularly basis by sleeping in a bed that’s right for you.
