What Makes A Good Night’s Sleep?

Sleep requirements vary slightly from person to person; however, most healthy adults on average require between 7 and 9 hours sleep per night. But while there are no hard and fast rules, tell-tale signs that you’re sleeping well do exist.

These include:

  • Shortly after waking up, you feel refreshed and alert
  • Your mood is generally good during your waking hours and not unduly affected by external factors
  • You feel no need for a nap during the day

Quantity and Quality

A good night’s sleep however, isn’t just about quantity, quality is also extremely significant. Key factors that contribute to good quality sleep include falling asleep in under 30 minutes, waking up for under 5 minutes once per night and being asleep for 85% of the time that you spend in bed.

Lack of good quality sleep can result in:

  • Fatigue, lethargy and lack of motivation
  • Moodiness and irritability
  • Difficulty with concentration and memory
  • Inability to cope with stress and difficult situations

Of course, this all begs the question: how can you improve your sleep to ensure that you’re getting enough of it?

Improving Your Sleep

Timing cues are incredibly important for informing our bodies when to sleep; so to improve your snoozes, it’s vital to have a regular bedtime that is inline with your biological clock.

Environmental factors can be extremely significant too. Try to avoid:

  • Caffeine up to six hours before bed
  • Intense exercise within two hours of bedtime
  • Smartphones and other electronic devices within one hour of going to sleep

But embrace:

  • Regular exercise, this includes anything that raises your heart rate for around 30 minutes a day
  • A relaxing bedtime routine, include tranquil easy-going activities like light reading, and meditative breathing.
  • A bed that is suited to your individual requirement, allowing you to sleep restfully throughout the night.
