A Guide To Mattress Buying – Kaymed’s Expert Tips and Hints

You spend nearly one third of your life in bed – that’s approximately 25 years – so it’s vital for your wellbeing to choose a mattress that suits your needs and preferences.

But, with so many options available, how do you identify a mattress that’s right for you? Read on for experts tips and hints in our guide to mattress buying.

Key Mattress Buying Considerations

To ensure you get the right bed for you, there are a few key questions you should ask yourself.

A Guide To Mattress Buying

Firm, Medium or Hard?

While the support that a mattress offers will largely be dictated by your weight (a lighter person will need a mattress with less support than a heavier person) you can tweak the feel of your bed with your upholstery choices; for instance, a mattress that contains fewer comfort layers will likely provide a firmer sleeping surface.

Do you sleep on your back, front or side?

Front and back sleepers may benefit from a firm to neutral mattress, while a side sleeper may prefer a slightly softer unit.

Do you regularly share a bed with anyone?

If a bed is regularly being used by more than one person, then all parties concerned should help to make a final decision on a mattress. A bed should be 10 centimetres longer than the tallest person sleeping in it. It should also be wide enough to allow all users to place their hands behind their head, elbows pointed out, without coming into contact with anything.

Try In Store

If you’re a regular reader of our blog, you’ll notice that we never tire of repeating the maxim “try before you buy”. That’s because there is simply no alternative when it comes to buying a bed. To test out a mattress in store, speak to a member of staff and ask to lie down on the bed. Remove any bulky clothing or jewellery, such as shoes and earrings, then adopt your normal sleeping position. Stay here for at least 10 minutes, and pay attention to the comfort and support offered by the bed, as well as how it aligns to your body.

Budgeting

Many people can baulk at the price of a high end mattress. But a bed should be considered on a cost per night bases. A high quality bed that comes with a multi-year warranty is a better investment than a cheaper option that doesn’t last as long.

Look for the Tick

The National Bed Federation, or the NBF, is the regulating body of the bed industry. All members of the NBF, such as Kaymed, must adhere to strict criteria pertaining to quality, safety, hygiene and more. So, whether you buy a Kaymed product or not, always look out for the NBF logo.

We hope the advice in our guide will help you to make an informed decision when choosing your next mattress.
