How to Take Care of Your Mattress

A mattress is a long term investment, the value for money of which increases the more use you get out of it. A good quality mattress should last around ten years with models like Kaymed Mighty Bed fifteen years. You can help to maximise its shelf life by taking good care of it. With that in mind, we offer a few key mattress maintenance tips in the following post.

Flip and Rotate

Flipping and rotating are simple but effective methods to extend the life of your mattress. When we sleep, we habitually position ourselves on the same area of the mattress. This can cause uneven wear and even visible indentations, particularly in new mattresses. By flipping a mattress from one side to another or rotating it on the same side, you can help to prevent against this. Once every three months ought to do the trick.

Invest in a Mattress Protector

We can’t stress enough the importance of a mattress protector. The covers, which fit between the mattress and mattress topper, guard against wear, damp and spills. While the primary purpose of the products is to protect, slightly padded varieties are available which also offer an extra layer of comfort.

Act Quickly on Spills

As we have just alluded to, spills can sometimes happen – and when they do, it’s important to act fast. The best course of action is to try to clean up excess liquid with an absorbent material, such as a towel, before leaving the mattress to dry naturally beside an open window. Don’t be tempted to try to expedite the drying process with a heat source, this could actually damage the mattress. If the spillage has left a stain and you need to use a cleaning agent, first test this on a non-visible area, and remember – never use bleach on a mattress.

Clean Your Room and Air Your Mattress

A key component of mattress maintenance is a clean environment. For this reason, it’s a very good idea to keep your room nice and clean, particularly those areas around your bed. Whenever possible, you should also aim to air your mattress as often as possible. To do this, remove the bedding and open your windows and doors to increase air circulation – leave the mattress like this for at least an hour.
