Protection Racket
Some consider mattress protectors to be unnecessary extravagances. Not us; in fact we can’t stress enough the importance of a mattress protector. This simple bedding addition goes betwixt the mattress and the mattress topper. Often slightly padded, the sheet can add an extra layer of comfort. However, the primary purpose of a mattress protector is, of course, to protect the mattress. This includes protection against wear and tear, damp and spills. Quality mattress protectors can really help to extend the life of your mattress.
Thrills and Spills
We have just touched on the subject of spills. They can be a real nightmare if they take place on your mattress. However, you can rest assured that there is a way to deal with them. The best course of action is to clean any liquids with an absorptive material, such as a towel, before allowing the mattress to dry naturally in the air (opening the window can help with this). Bleach should never be used to clean a stain. Only use a proprietary cleaner for stains and spills and we would advise that this is tested on a small (non visible) area Do not be tempted to try to assist the drying with a heat source as this could do more damage than good, adversely affecting interior components of the mattress. Once the mattress is completely dry, remake the bed with clean sheets.
Breaking the Mould
In reality, mouldy mattresses are not a particularly common condition. However, when this problem does occur, it can be a very serious issue – so we feel it merits a mention here. Moulds can cause any number of medical maladies, from respiratory issues to allergies. Moreover, the presence of mould on a mattress often suggests that something isn’t quite right with the environment in which it is being kept.
To protect against mould, you should ensure that your mattress is kept in a well ventilated room. You can help to increase circulation of air in your room by opening windows and doors. Mattresses that don’t get a lot of use, such as those kept in a spare room, can be more susceptible to mould, so turning and flipping the mattress regularly (around once every one or two months) can also help to keep it protected against mould.
