Lifestyle Factors To Improve Your Sleep Quality
A good quality bed is important for a great nights sleep but choosing the correct lifestyle factors will also impact on your sleep quality. In this article we look at 3 lifestyle choices that can help your sleep quality. We consider the importance of hydration, exercising and the actual bedroom environment you are sleeping in.
Three Lifestyle Factors To Improve Your Sleep Quality
Correct hydration
It is important to keep hydrated. Ideally you should drink fluids throughout the day and keep water by the bedside. A technique used by some is to freeze a bottle of water for when they go to bed, allowing it to thaw by the bedside during the night providing a cool refreshing water available whenever you need it during the night.!
Look at your lifestyle during the day where possible avoid too much alcohol. Some people find that alcohol helps them to fall asleep, but you are more likely to wake during the night and have a restless sleep. It will also dehydrate you. Correct hydration is especially important if you have been out in the sun. You should always avoid getting sunburn as this will certainly disrupt your sleep and leave you less than comfortable. Lastly remain mindful, accept the heat for what it is and stay focused on the positive aspects of sunny weather. A relaxed mind facilitates a relaxed restful sleep
Create The Right Bedroom Environment
Look at your bedroom environment. The following simple tips may have significant impact on your ability to get a good nights sleep
- Computers, mobile phones and all electrical goods should be left in another room.
- Blue light will disturb sleep and having a phone or laptop to hand just provides an unnecessary distraction that can keep you awake into the early morning hours.
- Ideally don’t engage in screen time directly before going to bed, This could be as simple as watching television, or perhaps using your laptop for some last minute work through to accessing social media on your tablet or mobile. The brain needs time to log off too.
- Make the bedroom sleep friendly. It should be cool, dark and quiet.
- Black out blinds can really help and these are readily available from DIY stores or major retailers
- A good mattress and good bedding will make them feel comfortable and secure. Click here to download the sleep guide
Exercise For Improved Sleep
During the winter the dark nights leaves less time to spend outside. Some approaches to try and ensure you still get the chance to exercise include
- Try and introduce some regular exercise in the late afternoon while there is still some daylight.
- Exercise and time outdoors helps you get a better night’s sleep. Some report that exercise can reduce the time to get to sleep by approximately ten minutes and increase total sleeping time by approximately forty minutes.
- Be aware that its not advisable to exercise late at night as this will leave you over heated and restless.
