Bed Stores – Try Before You Buy
You spend a long time in bed so choose it carefully
On average most adults seem to need around 7-8 hours sleep per night though this can vary from person to person. As we grow older our sleep patterns change and as we go through our life stages we tend to get less and less sleep. Older adults tend to sleep less, not because they need less sleep, but because we’re more likely to experience disturbed sleep as we grow older.
Typical sleep times:
- New-born babies sleep up to 18-21 hours per day
- 3-5 year olds sleep 11-13 hours per day
- Pre-teens need 11 hours
- Teenagers need 9-11 hours
- On average women are more likely to experience insomnia and sleep disturbances than men.
Choose Your Comfortable Bed
Your bed
The foundation of good sleep is a comfortable bed. The right mattress can make the difference between a restorative night’s sleep and poor quality sleep resulting in tiredness and fatigue. Lack of support from a mattress reinforces poor sleeping posture and can prevent you from getting a good nights’ sleep. If you sleep better in a hotel or other bed away from home, it may be time to change your bed. With the vast variety of beds on the market, choosing the right one can be difficult. Your local bed store should be able to offer tips to help you choose the best mattress for both support and comfort. Before you go shopping for a new bed, think about what you want from your bed, here are a few general points to consider when talking to the bed store sales advisor.
Type – firm or softer
What do you like or dislike about your current bed? Do you prefer a firmer or softer feel?
The cost of ownership
Always shop for the best value not the lowest price. You will spend a third of your life in bed so the cost per night can be measured in pennies. New technology in materials are being introduced by manufacturers such as Kaymed regularly and the better the construction, the better the support and comfort and the longer the bed will last.

Size matters, so think big
With a larger bed you are far less likely to disturb your partner, and will have the space to sleep more soundly. You should be able to lay side by side, with your arms behind your head and your elbows out, without touching each other. The plain truth is that a standard double bed will only offer each partner the width to spread out of a standard cot.
